Abstract

The ISO 14001 standard has been around for 10 years. At the same time, there has been a growing requirement from consumers for sustainable wood products. The way in which this has been achieved in Australia is through the development and implementation of the Australian Forestry Standard, also known as the ASS. Several government organisations and businesses have achieved certification to the level of ASS, based on the requirement that ASS has a foundation of ISO 14001 in place. My discussion is centred on experiences with Forestry South Australia in business risk management and in providing consulting services to the Japanese on plantation management to achieve certification.
