Heinz-Werner Engel

Senior environmental counsellor

Heinz-Werner Engel has been active in the environmental field for 30 years as a senior environmental counsellor in services linked to environmental protection in Belgium and throughout Europe. He has extensive training experience at a European and international level with a focus on the EU’s Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) and ISO 14001 in different sectors and cluster implementations.

His core expertise is the creation of participative management tools for small and micro companies in European Union accession countries and in developing countries. International trade, eco-marketing, management of NGO structures, as well as solid skills in management and environmental auditing of smaller companies fall within his scope of expertise.

Heinz has developed a number of instruments for SMEs to help them implement environmental management, including Ecomapping and EMAS/ISO easy, which are the worldwide reference for environmental management in small business and have been distributed in over 80 countries. He is involved in EMAS / ISO 14001 implementation in the public sector in Belgium, France, the Baltic States and emerging economies.

Considered as one of the world leading experts in EMS systems and small business applications, Heinz is representing INEM in the ISO/TC 207 Working Group and in the European Article 14 Committee for the revision of EMAS. His writings have been translated in more than 30 language and his tools Ecomapping and EMAS/ISO Easy are used worldwide.

Heinz serves on the panel of EMS experts for the Canadian-based 14.001 Registry. He has developed outstanding contacts in the fields of environmental standards setting, codes and regulations and their application, thus allowing him to participate in high-level training and coaching of executives.

Mark Brown

In this role Mark specialises in environmental knowledge and the operation of the site Environmental Management System (EMS). Brown is responsible for the execution of environmental induction and training projects including, oil spill contingency and gas leak scenarios. This includes the further development and execution of the EMS including regulatory requirements, minimising environmental impacts and working to achieve BDA’s environmental targets. He works in a large variety of areas from power production, water abstraction, water treatment to migratory birds, turtle nesting and snake handling.

Prior to joining BDA Brown was a Program Coordinator for South West Catchments Council based in Narrogin, WA.
He has significant experience across a broad number of aspects including biodiversity, salinity, soil health, management of waterways, pest and weed control as well as community involvement.
Brown is a qualified Environmental Scientist and Lead Auditor for ISO14001.

Trudy Robinson

Trudy is a Consultant with over 20 years experience in corporate business. She works closely with boards and executive teams to introduce governance strategies to enable compliance, structured board reports and facilitate JV, merger, acquisition or franchise diversification. Trudy shares articles and papers online and speaks at events.

She has been Project Manager for the Grainco takeover of NSW Grains Board, developed and implemented strategies for the Mergers Acquisitions and Divestment department within Elders Australia and a Member of the Reference Committee to establish Vocational (post) Graduate Certificate of Entrepreneurial Studies at Southbank Institute of Technology.

Brett Abraham

Zena Helman

JAS-ANZ EMS Technical Expert and independent EMS consultant

Ms Helman is the Director of Helman Environmental. She has extensive experience in environmental and sustainability management and planning in both the public and private sectors. Her experience as an environmental consultant includes working as a senior consultant in a number of companies, and as a solo practitioner. She has worked in the public sector in Victoria, where her experience included policy development and planning.

Zena has developed sustainability strategies, and developed, implemented, audited and reviewed environmental management systems (EMS), and components of these systems, and conducted training courses on EMS and environmental auditing in Australia and overseas. Zena has undertaken environmental assessments and audits of sites and facilities across Australia, and in Asia. She has prepared environmental management plans (EMPs) for a wide range of industries, and developed cleaner production / eco-efficiency programs for industry.

Zena is formally qualified in science, and has postgraduate qualifications in environmental science and administration. She is certified as a Lead Environmental Auditor by RABQSA, and acts as an EMS Technical Specialist and Lead Auditor for JAS ANZ. Her contribution to professional environmental practice has been recognised by election as a Fellow of the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand.
